Archangel Raphael: The Divine Healer, Signs and Spiritual Connection

This article explores ideas and perspectives that may not reflect Daniela DeCastro’s personal beliefs or views.

References to angelic healing describe spiritual beliefs and personal experiences, rather than established medical treatments. Prayer and spiritual practices should not replace medical or mental health care, or delay seeking help.

Archangel Raphael is known in spiritual and religious traditions as an angel of healing, compassion and guidance. People turn to him when they’re looking for comfort, support through difficult times, or a quiet moment of connection.

His association with healing runs through many accounts of Raphael, but there’s more to explore: his role as a companion to travellers, the green light often associated with him, and the prayers and practices people use to feel close to him. This article also includes Daniela’s own accounts of experiences she understands as encounters with Raphael.

Who is Archangel Raphael?

Raphael is often described as a gentle, reassuring presence. In traditions that recognise him, he is associated with care for the body, emotional comfort and spiritual wellbeing. Some people pray to him during illness or grief; others seek his guidance when they feel uncertain about the direction their lives are taking.

He is also associated with journeys and the people who care for others. Travellers may ask for his protection, while doctors, nurses, therapists and other carers may look to him as a source of spiritual encouragement in their work.

Gifts and qualities associated with Raphael

The original article describes several gifts attributed to Raphael. These are expressions of spiritual belief, rather than demonstrated abilities or promised outcomes:

  • Healing and restoration: Raphael is called upon in prayers for people facing illness, injury or exhaustion, with the hope of finding comfort and strength during recovery.
  • Emotional support: Many people associate him with compassion during grief, sadness, anxiety and other difficult experiences.
  • Guidance on a journey: His connection with travellers extends, in contemporary spiritual interpretations, to periods of personal change and the search for meaning.
  • Protection and reassurance: Some people visualise his presence as a comforting light around them when they feel unsettled or vulnerable.
  • Spiritual understanding: Raphael is also associated with reflection, a sense of connection with the divine, and greater awareness of one’s own needs and values.

You don’t have to force a particular feeling or experience. If Raphael is meaningful to you, a simple prayer or a few quiet minutes can be a way to reflect on the support you need.

Archangel Raphael’s origins and religious traditions

Raphael’s name is commonly translated from Hebrew as “God heals”. That meaning helps explain why healing is so closely associated with him, alongside compassion, guidance and care for people facing hardship.

Raphael in the Book of Tobit

One of the best-known accounts of Raphael appears in the Book of Tobit, an ancient Jewish religious work. In the story, he appears in human form as a travelling companion named Azariah, accompanying Tobit’s son Tobias, also called Tobiah in some translations.

His identity isn’t immediately revealed. He offers guidance throughout the journey and plays a central role in helping Tobit and Sarah. Later, in Tobit 12, he identifies himself as Raphael, one of seven angels who stand before God.

This account brings together several qualities still associated with Raphael today: companionship on a difficult journey, practical guidance, protection and healing. We’ll return to the story in more detail later in the article.

Raphael in Christianity

The Book of Tobit is included in Catholic and Orthodox biblical traditions. Most Protestant traditions don’t recognise it as canonical scripture, although some Bible editions include it among the Apocrypha. This difference helps explain why Raphael may be familiar to some Christian readers and less familiar to others.

In the Roman Catholic calendar, Raphael is celebrated alongside Michael and Gabriel on 29 September. His connection with healing and the journey in Tobit remains central to Christian devotion to him.

Raphael in Jewish tradition

Raphael also appears in Jewish rabbinic literature. In Bava Metzia 86b, a passage in the Babylonian Talmud, he is identified as the angel who comes to heal Abraham following his circumcision.

This is a rabbinic interpretation associated with the visitors in Genesis 18; that chapter of Genesis itself does not name Raphael. Keeping that distinction clear helps us understand where particular accounts come from.

Contemporary spiritual interpretations

The original article also explores Raphael through prayer, meditation, green-light visualisation and personal experiences. These practices reflect contemporary spiritual approaches and individual interpretations. They shouldn’t be taken as teachings shared by every Jewish or Christian community.

Raphael means different things to different people. Understanding the source of a story or practice gives us room to appreciate it without assuming that all traditions describe him in the same way.

Raphael’s connection with healing

Healing is the quality most closely associated with Archangel Raphael. In spiritual accounts, his presence is often described as gentle, compassionate and reassuring. People may turn to him when they’re unwell, grieving, emotionally exhausted or finding it difficult to make sense of what they’re going through.

What someone means by “healing” can vary. They may be praying for physical recovery, looking for comfort after a loss, or hoping to feel more connected to themselves and their faith. These hopes can be deeply personal, and an experience that feels meaningful to one person may be understood differently by someone else.

Comfort during illness and recovery

Some people include prayers to Raphael alongside their medical care. They might ask for courage before an appointment, patience during recovery, or support for the people caring for them. Prayer can also give someone words for fears they’ve been struggling to express.

Accounts of angelic healing belong to religious belief and personal experience. They don’t establish that an angel has treated an illness, and they can’t tell us how a health condition will develop.

Support through grief and emotional pain

Raphael’s compassionate character also features in accounts of emotional healing. People describe seeking his presence during bereavement, loneliness and periods of upheaval, sometimes finding reassurance in prayer or quiet reflection.

Daniela describes the energy she associates with Raphael as calm, soothing, gentle, compassionate and loving. In her personal accounts, that sense of support has been meaningful during grief and difficult experiences.

Making space to notice your own needs

A spiritual practice can be an opportunity to pause and ask yourself what you need. Perhaps you’ve been pushing through exhaustion, avoiding a difficult conversation, or putting everyone else’s needs ahead of your own.

If connecting with Raphael is part of your beliefs, you might use that time to reflect on one practical act of care: asking for support, arranging an appointment, resting, or speaking honestly with someone you trust.

Feeling unwell or continuing to struggle doesn’t mean you’ve failed spiritually or prayed incorrectly. You deserve appropriate care and support, whatever you believe and whatever you experience during prayer.

Daniela’s personal experiences with Archangel Raphael

In Daniela’s own words, edited for clarity

My connection with Raphael is personal. The experiences I’m sharing here are how I remember and understand those moments. Some were surprising, some were comforting, and one challenged the way I thought about asking for help.

A moment that changed how I prayed

An early experience that I later associated with Archangel Raphael happened around 2004, before I knew much about him. It was the afternoon, and I was lying in my children’s bunk bed with a painful injury to my left knee after a bike mishap. My knee was red and swollen. Any movement hurt, and I couldn’t fall asleep because of the pain.

I was praying, asking for healing and for the pain to be taken away. Really, I was begging for help. Then I heard a response that completely caught me off guard: “Why don’t you heal yourself?”

What surprised me was the tone. It sounded almost sarcastic, very matter-of-fact, and had an edge I wasn’t expecting. I took a sharp breath and said, “Okay.”

Until then, I hadn’t thought about having any part in my own healing. I was used to giving my power away and pleading for someone else to help me. That response pushed me out of that familiar position.

I placed both hands on my knee, even though it was uncomfortable. To my surprise, the pain eased enough for me to fall asleep, still in that awkward position.

I understood the experience as a reminder that I didn’t have to feel entirely powerless. Looking back, I also think about how instinctively we sometimes place a hand on a sore area when we’re seeking comfort.

For me, the bluntness of that response mattered. It interrupted a pattern of always asking to be helped without considering how I might respond to my own needs.

Seeing Raphael during a crystal bowl meditation

The first time I saw Raphael during a crystal bowl meditation was a very different experience. I knew very little about him and arrived with a simple intention: I wanted to see an angel.

What I experienced felt far more powerful than I’d expected. Raphael wasn’t the only presence I perceived, but he’s the one I’ll focus on here.

His presence felt inviting, welcoming and warm. I felt completely at ease. I perceived him in a male form, although my understanding of angels is that they are light beings without a fixed gender.

I was surprised to perceive a physical appearance, including ethnicity. In my mind, I reacted with something like, “Oh wow, not what I was expecting.” The response I experienced was: “We are everything.”

I understood that as a message of love and acceptance for everyone. To me, it expressed that these beings weren’t limited to a particular religion or practice.

Then I noticed his huge, friendly smile and contagious laughter. That warmth has stayed with me. I came away with the impression that Raphael adores laughter.

That made sense to me in connection with grief. When someone is carrying a heavy burden, moments of laughter and joy can feel especially precious. The Raphael I perceived wasn’t solemn or distant. He felt approachable and full of warmth.

Comfort through grief and difficult experiences

I’ve also felt supported by Raphael during grief and devastating experiences in my life. The qualities I associate with his presence are calmness, gentleness, compassion and love.

These experiences are part of my own spiritual understanding. I share them as personal accounts, rather than as something everyone should expect to see, hear or feel.

These recollections describe Daniela’s interpretation of her experiences. The easing of pain in the first account does not establish what caused it or show that an injury was healed.

Ways to connect with Archangel Raphael

If Raphael is part of your spiritual practice, you can approach that connection simply. You don’t need special objects, a memorised prayer or a particular setting. The practices below offer different ways to make room for prayer and reflection; none guarantees an encounter or a particular result.

Speak a prayer in your own words

Prayer can be as straightforward as saying what’s on your mind. You might ask for comfort, clarity or the courage to seek help. There’s no need to make the words sound formal.

Archangel Raphael, I’m asking for comfort and guidance. Help me recognise what I need, accept support and take the next caring step for myself. May I meet this moment with patience and courage.

The original article also offers a very simple approach: “Please help me.” Sometimes that’s all you have the words for.

Try quiet meditation and green-light visualisation

Sit somewhere comfortable and let your breathing settle into its natural rhythm. If it feels helpful, imagine a soft green light around you. Green is often associated with Raphael in contemporary spiritual practices.

Treat the image as a focus for reflection. You might notice feelings, thoughts or nothing in particular. There’s no need to search for a message or judge how well you’re doing. If visualisation doesn’t suit you, simply sit quietly with your prayer or intention.

Lit green candle beside polished green stones, lavender, mint and an open journal
A few familiar objects can help mark out a quiet space for reflection.

Use meaningful colours, crystals or images

A green stone, an image of Raphael or a small personal object can serve as a reminder to pause. The original article mentions emerald, malachite, green aventurine and jade as examples of green crystals people may choose.

Their role here is symbolic. You don’t need to buy a crystal, and these objects shouldn’t be treated as remedies for illness. Choose something because it holds meaning for you or helps you focus.

Include herbs as part of the setting

The original article suggests sage, mint and lavender as plants some people associate with their Raphael practice. A sprig of greenery or a familiar scent may be enough to make the space feel personal.

These are optional elements of a ritual, rather than a requirement for connection or evidence that a plant carries angelic healing properties.

Choose an affirmation that feels honest

An affirmation can give you a phrase to return to when your thoughts feel scattered. Keep it believable and kind, without requiring yourself to feel well or positive.

I’m open to comfort and support. I can listen to my needs and take one manageable step at a time.

You can change the wording to fit your beliefs. If an affirmation feels forced, you can leave it out.

Light a green candle

Some people light a green candle as a symbolic focus for prayer. You might spend a few moments watching the flame while reflecting on the care, reassurance or direction you’re seeking.

Use a suitable holder on a stable, heat-resistant surface, keep the flame away from anything flammable and never leave it unattended. A battery-operated candle is an equally suitable option for this practice.

Pick whichever approach feels comfortable. A quiet moment and a few sincere words are enough; you don’t need to work through every practice or experience a sign.

Signs people associate with Archangel Raphael

People who feel connected with Raphael sometimes describe particular colours, dreams, sensations or coincidences as signs of his presence. These interpretations can hold personal meaning, but there isn’t a reliable checklist that confirms an angel is nearby.

The examples below reflect the spiritual interpretations explored in the original article. You can consider what they mean to you while leaving room for ordinary explanations.

Green light and reminders in nature

Green is frequently associated with Raphael in contemporary spiritual practices. Some people describe noticing green light during meditation or finding that green objects and natural surroundings draw their attention after prayer.

The original article gives the example of traffic lights turning green during a journey. Someone might experience that timing as reassuring, but it doesn’t establish that Raphael has changed the lights or is directing the journey. A feather found on a woodland path may carry personal symbolism in much the same way.

Warmth, tingles or chills

Some people report warmth, tingling or chills while praying or thinking about Raphael. Within their spiritual practice, they may interpret those feelings as comfort or connection.

Physical sensations can have many explanations, so the feeling alone cannot identify its cause. You don’t need to experience any particular sensation for a prayer or moment of reflection to be meaningful.

Dreams that feel significant

Dreams are another setting in which people describe encounters with Raphael. A dream might include a reassuring figure, green imagery, a journey or a conversation that stays with you after waking.

If you’d like to reflect on it, write down what you remember and how it made you feel. Consider its connection with your current worries, hopes or experiences. A vivid dream can feel important without being a prediction, a diagnosis or an instruction you must follow.

A renewed interest in nature and self-care

The original article also connects Raphael with feeling drawn towards the outdoors: taking walks, exploring a new trail or spending quiet time among trees.

You might understand that renewed interest through your relationship with Raphael. You might also simply recognise a wish to slow down and pay more attention to your needs. There’s no requirement to settle on one explanation before enjoying the experience.

Meaningful songs, words and everyday coincidences

A song comes on just when its words feel relevant. A number on a car registration catches your eye. A book opens at a passage that speaks to something you’ve been thinking about, or a social media post seems unusually well timed.

Some people call these moments synchronicities and interpret them as spiritual reassurance. Others understand them as coincidences or examples of noticing what is already on their minds. Feeling moved by a moment doesn’t require certainty about what caused it.

Music, inner impressions and perceived whispers

Some spiritual accounts describe a phrase seeming to arise during prayer, a melody bringing comfort, or an impression experienced as a quiet message. People who use the term “clairaudience” may interpret such experiences as a form of spiritual hearing.

That is an interpretation, rather than an established explanation. An unfamiliar sound, ringing in the ears or a perceived whisper does not by itself show that Raphael is communicating.

Leave room for uncertainty

You can appreciate a comforting experience without treating it as proof. Give yourself time to reflect, and keep practical decisions grounded in reliable information. Signs and impressions cannot guarantee safety, establish a medical fact or reliably predict what will happen next.

What do people ask Archangel Raphael for help with?

Prayers to Raphael often begin with a concern for someone’s health, but the original article describes a wider range of hopes: emotional comfort, guidance, safer journeys, relationships and care for animals. These are things people seek through their faith, rather than outcomes that prayer can promise.

Strength during illness or recovery

People may pray to Raphael for themselves or someone they love during illness, injury or life with a long-term condition. A prayer might express hope for recovery, relief from fear, or strength to face the next appointment.

There can also be room in that prayer for carers and healthcare professionals: patience for someone providing daily support, clear communication, or courage to ask questions about care.

Comfort through emotional difficulties

Grief, anxiety, sadness and painful life changes feature in many spiritual accounts of Raphael. Someone may turn to him when they feel overwhelmed or find it difficult to explain what they’re carrying.

A simple request might be, “Help me find support and be gentle with myself today.” Spiritual comfort can sit alongside conversations with trusted people and professional support.

Clarity and spiritual understanding

Some people seek Raphael’s guidance when reflecting on their values, purpose or relationship with the divine. The original article describes this as connecting with the higher self and developing spiritual understanding.

You might use prayer to consider what matters to you, what needs your attention, and which choices feel consistent with your values. You don’t need an immediate answer to give those questions thoughtful attention.

Reassurance when travelling

Raphael’s role as a travelling companion in the Book of Tobit is one reason people ask for his protection on journeys. A prayer before leaving home may be a familiar ritual or a way to express concern for someone travelling far away.

That spiritual reassurance belongs alongside practical preparation and sensible precautions. It isn’t an assurance that a journey will be free from difficulties.

Understanding in relationships

People also ask Raphael for help with strained relationships. Their prayers may focus on forgiveness, honest communication, patience or understanding another person’s point of view.

Reconciliation isn’t always possible or appropriate. Sometimes the caring next step is a clear boundary, accepting that a relationship has changed, or finding support to move forward.

Care for pets and other animals

The original article extends these prayers to animals. People may ask Raphael for comfort for an unwell pet, strength while making difficult care decisions, or reassurance during the worry of waiting for news.

These prayers express love and concern. They don’t replace veterinary attention or establish that an animal is recovering.

You can bring an ordinary, immediate concern to prayer. Asking for the courage to make a phone call, accept help or face a difficult conversation can be as meaningful as a longer spiritual practice.

Healing stories and the Book of Tobit

Stories associated with Raphael range from ancient religious narratives to deeply personal recollections. They help explain why people connect him with healing and compassionate guidance, although a spiritual account and a medically established explanation are different things.

Daniela’s account: a frightening night of illness

In Daniela’s own words, edited for clarity

Artistic recreation of Daniela resting in a dark bedroom, watching four glowing orbs near her bedside lamp
An AI-generated artistic recreation inspired by Daniela’s recollection of that night.

This happened around 2009, I believe, while I was living with my husband and two children. Things at home were extremely difficult. I was working a lot, raising the children and ignoring my own needs physically, mentally and emotionally.

One day, I started feeling very unwell in the classroom. I was freezing, and my co-teacher suggested that I go outside. I’d felt something was wrong that morning and had brought a thermometer, which I understood as following spiritual guidance.

When I checked my temperature, it was around 103 degrees. With my colleague’s support, I made it through the working day and rushed to collect my children from the bus stop. I asked them to get into the car quickly.

As soon as we reached home, I ran through to the bathroom and began vomiting. It felt as though my body had held everything together until I got there.

That night, I was in pain and my fever kept rising. My bedroom was dark because I had a severe headache. I lay awake frightened, praying for help.

When I opened my eyes and looked towards the bedside lamp, I saw what appeared to me to be three or four orbs of light moving rapidly in circles. I experienced communication from them that I understood as telepathic.

As I asked for help, the lights seemed to move faster. I felt my fever and pain ease, and I would fall asleep. Then I’d wake feeling unwell again, ask for help and experience the same pattern. In my recollection, this continued through the night until sunrise.

At one point, the message I perceived became very firm: I was seriously ill, they were doing what they could, and I needed to see a doctor and receive medication in the morning.

I said that I would, but I knew I was partly saying it because I wanted the help to continue. I didn’t have health insurance, and I had very little intention of making an appointment.

The response I experienced was insistent. I understood it as them seeing through my answer and making clear that I needed medical attention.

This was the first time I remember seeing beings of light with my eyes open. Looking back, I might have expected to feel amazed, but I think I was simply too ill at the time.

The next morning, I called a doctor and arranged an appointment for that afternoon. When she examined me, she was alarmed by how unwell I was and wanted me to go directly to hospital.

She told me she suspected encephalitis and repeatedly urged me to let her arrange an ambulance. This was our first appointment together, and I was shocked by what she was saying.

I was also frightened about the cost because I had no health insurance. I cried and pleaded with her to prescribe medication and let me go home. Eventually, she did. She called the following day to check on me, which was something I hadn’t experienced from a doctor before.

She had warned me that I was very ill and could take five days or more to begin feeling better. That conversation brought home how much I had been disregarding my own physical needs.

I understood the experience that night as help from Raphael and other archangels. A central part of the message, as I experienced it, was that I needed to seek medical attention and treat myself with more care. I believe they helped me on several levels.

This is Daniela’s recollection and spiritual interpretation. The article does not provide a confirmed diagnosis or medical evidence explaining the perceived lights or changes in symptoms. Her decision to decline hospital care is part of the account, rather than an example for readers to follow.

The Book of Tobit: a companion on a difficult journey

In the Book of Tobit, Raphael accompanies Tobias on a journey while appearing to be an ordinary human guide. Along the way, he instructs Tobias to keep parts of a fish that later play a role in the story’s deliverance and healing.

The heart and liver feature in the account of Sarah’s deliverance from the demon Asmodeus. Later, Raphael directs Tobias to use the fish’s gall on his father’s eyes, and the narrative describes Tobit regaining his sight.

You can read these episodes in Tobit 8 and Tobit 11. They are religious narratives, not instructions for treating illness or eye conditions.

Raphael’s role throughout the story helps explain his enduring association with travellers, healing and guidance. His support unfolds through companionship and specific actions before he reveals his identity.

How to approach personal healing testimonies

Other accounts associated with Raphael describe warmth, reassurance, green light or a renewed sense of emotional strength. Some people also attribute a physical recovery to his help.

These stories can tell us about someone’s beliefs and what an experience meant to them. On their own, they cannot establish the cause of a recovery or show that another person will have the same outcome.

A prayer to Archangel Raphael

If you’d like to finish with a prayer, you can use the words below or adapt them to your own beliefs. This is a suggested prayer for personal reflection, rather than a traditional scriptural text.

A moment for prayer

Archangel Raphael, I welcome the comfort and compassion I associate with your presence.

Be with me as I face what feels difficult. Help me listen honestly to my needs, find the courage to ask for help, and accept the care available to me.

When I’m grieving, may I have room for my sadness and moments of warmth along the way. When I’m uncertain, help me pause and consider my next step with care.

May those who are unwell receive support. May those who care for them find strength. May I treat myself and others with patience, kindness and understanding.

Amen.

Taking the reflection into everyday life

Raphael’s place in religious stories and personal spiritual practice centres on healing, companionship and compassionate guidance. For some readers, prayer is a familiar expression of faith. Others may be exploring these ideas for the first time.

Daniela’s accounts add a personal perspective, including warmth, laughter and the reminder to pay attention to her own needs. You can reflect on what resonates with you without expecting to share her experiences or interpretations.

When you’re ready, consider one small act of care you can carry into your day. It could be checking in with someone, making time to rest, or asking for support you’ve been putting off.

Questions for reflection

Here are five questions to revisit the practices covered in this article. Open each one for a suggested answer, then consider what feels meaningful to you.

1. What’s a simple way to include Raphael in a spiritual practice?

Prayer is one approach. You can use your own words to express a worry, ask for comfort or reflect on the help you need. A short, sincere prayer is enough; it doesn’t require a particular formula.

2. Which colour is associated with Raphael in the meditation described here?

Green. Some people imagine a soft green light as a focus during meditation. This is a symbolic practice, rather than evidence of an angelic presence or a medical treatment.

3. Which objects might someone choose as reminders of Raphael?

An image of Raphael, a green candle or a green stone such as emerald, malachite, green aventurine or jade. These objects are optional aids to reflection. You don’t need to buy anything to pray or meditate.

4. What could a supportive affirmation sound like?

“I’m open to comfort and support. I can listen to my needs and take one manageable step at a time.” Choose words that feel honest, without placing pressure on yourself to feel positive or become well.

5. What is the purpose of lighting a green candle?

It can provide a symbolic focus and mark out a quiet moment for prayer. The colour connects with the imagery explored in this article. A battery-operated candle can serve the same reflective purpose.
