When Hurtful Words Stay With You

Have you ever had someone say something so cruel that it took your breath away? Or felt a knot in your stomach long after a difficult conversation ended?

We grew up hearing, “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” That has never matched my experience. Words can hurt deeply, and sometimes we carry them for years.

For me, some of the things people have said have stayed with me longer than physical pain. That doesn’t make physical violence acceptable or less serious. It simply means emotional hurt deserves care, too.

I came across this healing and releasing technique many years ago, when I was beginning to realize there might be more to our world than meets the eye. During a visit with two psychic-healer friends, they told me they sensed blocked energy around my solar plexus, in the upper abdomen.

At the time, I had no idea what they meant or what I was supposed to do about it. So I made a joke:

“At my age, who the heck doesn’t have baggage?”

Later, I went home, lay quietly on my bed, and followed my intuition. I didn’t have a script or a method someone had taught me. I simply began noticing what I felt and imagining a way to let it go.

The five steps that follow describe that experience. If you choose to try them, take your time. You don’t need to see vivid pictures, feel anything dramatic, or force an experience. Let the imagery be something you explore at your own pace.

Make yourself comfortable

Find a Quiet Place

Begin somewhere quiet, where you can lie still without being interrupted. For me, that was my bed. You might prefer a couch or another comfortable spot where your body feels supported.

Turn off your phone notifications. If other people are home, ask them to give you a little time to yourself. Or choose a moment when you have the place to yourself, if that makes it easier to settle.

Reduce distractions

Silence your devices and give yourself a few unhurried minutes.

Get comfortable

Lie down with support where you need it, or sit if that feels better.

Let yourself settle

Close your eyes if comfortable, or rest your gaze on something nearby.

Let your breathing find its own easy rhythm. Notice the support beneath you, and give yourself permission to leave the day’s tasks alone for a moment. You don’t need to empty your mind or reach a special meditative state before you begin.

When I first tried this, I simply lay quietly and paid attention. That was enough of a starting point.

Notice what comes up

Gently Scan Your Body

Once you feel settled, slowly move your attention through your body. You might begin at your head and work down toward your feet, noticing each area without trying to change anything.

In my first experience, I sensed patches of warmth that appeared red in my mind’s eye. I thought of them as little pools of energy or debris. They weren’t only around my solar plexus, where my friends had described them; I noticed them in different parts of my body.

At the time, I wondered whether I was simply making it all up. But I stayed with the exercise and followed what came naturally. I understood it as guidance from my higher self and the Archangels, although I hadn’t been taught this particular process.

A simple way to begin

Ask yourself, “What do I notice here?” Move your attention gently from one area to the next. You might notice warmth, tension, a color in your imagination, or nothing in particular. There is no required response.

You don’t need to reproduce the red color I imagined. Your experience may be very different, and you may prefer to work with a simple idea or feeling rather than a clear mental picture.

For this exercise, treat any colors or images as personal symbols. They don’t tell you that something is wrong with your body or confirm an energy blockage. Simply notice what arises, without judging it or searching for something you think should be there.

Bring the imagery together

Gather the Imagined Energy

After noticing those warm, red patches, I imagined a point as small as the tip of a pin inside my body. In my mind, it acted like a powerful magnet, drawing the scattered energy toward it.

I pictured it collecting more and more of what I had noticed during the body scan. Rather than focusing on each separate patch, I now had one place in the visualization where it could all gather.

Picture a Small Gathering Point

Imagine a tiny point of light near your abdomen. Let it represent a place where the colors, shapes, or feelings you have chosen to work with can gently come together. If the magnet image makes sense to you, picture it drawing those symbols toward that point.

The pin was only a mental image; there is nothing physical to use or do here. If you prefer, imagine a small golden light instead. Choose an image that feels comfortable and easy to hold in your mind.

Take your time with this part. You don’t need to create a strong sensation or gather a particular amount. When the image feels complete enough for you, move on to the next step: imagining the release.

Give the imagery somewhere to go

Visualize the Release

When I felt I had gathered enough, I imagined it rising out of my stomach area like a volcano erupting or a geyser bursting upward. Above it, I pictured a beautiful white bag collecting everything I was ready to release.

In my mind, there was enough to fill a kitchen trash bag. That was simply the scale of the picture that came to me; you don’t need to imagine the same amount or use such a dramatic scene.

Imagine a White Bag Above You

Picture an open white bag floating above your abdomen. Imagine the energy you gathered moving gently upward into it. You might see a stream of color, a soft mist, or a flow of light. Let the bag hold the symbols of what you are choosing to let go.

For me, this part felt liberating. As I pictured the release, I felt lighter throughout my body. I was still wondering whether it was all my imagination, but the experience was meaningful to me.

If the volcano or geyser image feels too intense, use the gentler flow described above. Keep breathing comfortably and let the scene unfold without straining, holding your breath, or trying to push anything out physically.

There is no particular sensation you need to feel. When you are ready, imagine the flow coming to a close and the white bag holding what you have gathered. In the final step, you’ll tie it with a golden ribbon and let it float away.

Let the image drift away

Let It Go With a Golden Ribbon

Once the white bag felt full, I imagined tying a beautiful golden ribbon around it. Then I watched it float upward, higher and higher, until it rose beyond Earth’s atmosphere and into the distance.

The white bag and golden ribbon represent letting go in this personal visualization.

In my mind’s eye, the bag traveled toward a faraway galaxy. I spoke words about releasing it back to the galaxy and allowing it to be transmuted. By that, I meant transformed. Then I imagined the bag bursting into beautiful white light, scattering like a meteor shower.

If you would like words to accompany your own visualization, you could use this simple version or choose something that feels more natural to you:

“I am ready to let this go. I release what I have gathered and imagine it transforming into light.”

Watch the bag become smaller as it moves away. If it feels right, picture it dissolving into a soft shower of white light. Or simply let it drift out of view. There is no need to force a vivid ending.

Even as I was doing this, part of me wondered whether I was just imagining the whole experience. I hadn’t done anything like it before. What stayed with me was the sense of release I felt while following the imagery.

Take a Moment Before Getting Up

When you finish, let the scene fade and notice the room around you. Feel the bed or chair supporting you, gently move your hands and feet, and open your eyes if they were closed. Give yourself a moment before returning to your day, whether you feel different or much the same.

Looking back on the experience

What I Noticed Afterward

The next time I visited my two psychic-healer friends, I didn’t tell them what I had done. When they placed their hands around my stomach area during their energy work, both seemed surprised. They asked what had changed and told me they no longer sensed the blockages they had described before.

I explained the whole process: the body scan, the tiny magnet, the white bag, and the golden ribbon. Until then, I had still been wondering whether I had simply made it all up. Their response felt like confirmation to me, and it became an important moment in my spiritual journey.

That was our personal interpretation of the experience. Their impressions weren’t a medical examination or an objective measurement of energy, and they don’t establish what caused the lighter feeling I noticed. What I can share honestly is how it felt to me and why I found it meaningful.

I’m sharing this because it gave me a way to work with what I was feeling, using images that came naturally to me.

If you explore this healing and releasing technique, your experience may look nothing like mine. You may feel relaxed, emotional, thoughtful, or much the same as before. You don’t have to produce a dramatic result for the time you spend with yourself to matter.

My hope is that this gives you one more gentle practice to consider. Take what feels useful, leave what doesn’t, and remember that letting go can take time. You can make room for spiritual reflection while also seeking practical help and professional support when you need it.
