Coming from a place of ego. It’s important to recognize, why am I offended? Why are my feelings hurt? Was something actually done to me or am I coming from a place of ego? Today I am actually pondering these questions with a sense of embarrassment or shame. I realized this is coming from a bruised ego, not from any real offense. I thought I had learned this life lesson a long time ago and realized, oh boy am I wrong about that.
As a kid, I was given great advice from my mother that has truly helped me. It was very simple, “not everyone is going to like you.” This freed me up in my life to accept that I am not a good match for everyone. In my work though I came to the realization that I had forgotten to incorporate this staple of wisdom. Instead, my ego was like, what do you mean they didn’t like it? I can only give my best, my job is to release it and not look back whether someone valued it, put it to use or just threw my gift away. Not about me. I deliver the message and it is up to individuals to decide what they want to do with the information.

Stop and Think

We get so hung up in ego thinking they should value what we gave them, but that is about control. If you stop and think about the situation and still feel injured then you can choose to not engage with that individual again. If we are having hurt feelings it is highly beneficial to dive in and ask why am I feeling this way about any given situation. That is truly time well spent in self-reflection.

If you instead waste your time thinking, why did they do that to me? That is giving away your power and wasting your valuable time that you will never get back. In situations where we keep asking, why does this keep happening to me, actually perpetuates similar experiences. Why waste more time on them to only come to conclusions that may or may not be true. Why invest in that negative thought pattern?

If it’s your ego that’s hurt, then a useful investigation is to ask why does that hurt my feelings? I know that the gift I gave them was good. If they don’t value me, wouldn’t it be wise for me to choose not to invest any more of my time with them or people that treat me in a similar disrespectful manner?

Peace in Knowing the Truth

A strong healthy boundary is a great way to proceed but not before looking and wondering what’s here that is making me uncomfortable? What is it that I really need to look at? Is this another wonderful opportunity for me to learn and grow? I believe the answer is yes. Most of the time we feel uncomfortable with someone, the situations have nothing to do with us but it is about the person going through something. We automatically take responsibility for something, a behavior or energy that has nothing to do with us.

Why do we have a tendency to blame ourselves and take ownership in this manner? If we all show up and do the best to our abilities then there is nothing to apologize for, we can only give our best. After that, we have nothing to be ashamed of. It is only through not showing up to give our all in a situation that we feel shame or regret. If we give it our all then we have done our best and have nothing else to give. There is a certain amount of peace in knowing this truth.
